New Traffic Law Requires Drivers to Do Drug test

Battambang: The Minister of Interior, DPM Sar Kheng, confirmed that the Royal Government will draft a new law on the amendment of the new road traffic laws requiring the public and private sectors to perform a drug test before hiring a driver.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony of achievements (Bavel High School, Lvea High School, and Svay Prey Primary School) in Bavel District, Battambang Province, on December 14, 2022, DPM Sar Kheng stated that the National Road Safety Committee will organize a meeting to review and approve the new draft on road traffic laws, requiring drivers to undergo drug tests to ensure social security and public health.

"I think it is necessary to have a drug test. If you want to be a driver of any type of vehicle, whether public or private, it is necessary to have a certificate of a drug test's result. If positive, you won't be allowed to work," he said.

In addition, the Minister of Interior emphasized that the draft law on the amendment of the new road traffic law stated that those who wish to join the ranks of police officers, teachers, commune councilors, civil servants of the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces, or to work in the private sector (companies, factories, and enterprises), as well as students of all ages, have to undergo a drug test.

DPM emphasized that "this is an obligation, not a request that you can choose whether to do or not; we must consider it an obligation."

DPM Sar Kheng claimed that if any company agrees to accept a driver without a drug test and if any problems occur, the company will be held responsible before the law.
